Sports Fans Coalition Calls for FIFA President Sepp Blatter to Resign

On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) unsealed a 47-count indictment against 14 international soccer officials and sports marketing executives who, according to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, engaged in “corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deeply-rooted both abroad and here in the United States,” on issues ranging from television rights, World Cups hosting rights, and FIFA leadership.

David Goodfriend, Chairman of Sports Fans Coalition, issued the following statement:

“Sports Fans Coalition, on behalf of sports fans worldwide, calls upon FIFA President Sepp Blatter to resign. When officials entrusted to protect the integrity of the game apparently accept bribes and kickbacks, the athletes, fans, and ultimately the game suffer the consequences. Regardless of the outcome of federal law enforcement agencies’ actions, corruption, scandal, and an affiliation with human rights abuses have stained FIFA’s reputation. President Blatter has lost his ability to lead and should step down for the good of the sport.

Further, we commend Attorney General Lynch, the DOJ, and FBI for their work to protect fans of the world’s most popular sport. American sports fans and taxpayers hope that our law enforcement officials will remain vigilant in keeping sports clean off the field, just as games should be played clean on the field.”
