Fans Win Again as NFL Drops Non-Profit Tax Status

Sports Fans Coalition applauds the decision by the NFL to drop its non-profit tax status, currently codified in Section 501(c)(6) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code.

David Goodfriend, Chairman of Sports Fans Coalition, issued the following statement:

“We congratulate the hundreds of thousands of fans who spoke out against the NFL’s non-profit tax status. You won! Thanks also go out to super-fan Lynda Woolard, who started the petition drive, and to our friends at SackNFLTaxBreaks. When fans speak up, leagues listen.

“A special salute to former Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) for his tireless efforts to end this taxpayer giveaway to the league. In response to his request, the Joint Committee on Taxation calculated that the exemption cost taxpayers $10 million per year. With the NFL’s decision to relinquish its non-profit tax status, that money can go to better use.”
